Hire App Developers in India, Starting With a Two Week Pilot
Hire app developers in India who work inside your team rather than behind an account manager. You interview every mobile app developer yourself, start with a short paid pilot on real backlog work, and keep the code in your own repository from the first commit.
Most people arriving on this page have been burned before, usually by a vendor who sent a strong interviewee and staffed the project with somebody else. So this page is mostly about what to insist on, including from us.
How to Hire App Developers in India, Step by Step
This is our process, and it doubles as a checklist you can hold any vendor to. The line under each step is the one worth arguing about. For the longer version, including where to look and how to screen, read how to hire app developers in India.
Send the Requirement
The stack, the seniority, and roughly what the person will work on. A formal job description is fine and so is a paragraph. Mutual NDA signed before you share anything sensitive.
Insist on: an NDA before you describe your product, not after.
Review Matched Profiles
Profiles of developers already on our team who fit the stack, with real project history rather than a skills matrix padded with everything they once read about.
Insist on: named people with real history, not anonymised resource sheets.
Run Your Own Interview
Interview each candidate in whatever format you use internally. Technical test, pair session, system design, your call. Reject anyone who does not fit, with no penalty.
Insist on: interviewing the person who will actually do the work.
Two Week Paid Pilot
Real tickets from your backlog, not a contrived test task. You judge actual pull requests, actual estimates, and how they communicate when something breaks.
Insist on: a short paid trial rather than a long first commitment.
Continue or Stop
Carry on month to month with 30 days notice, or stop at the end of the pilot owing nothing further. Replacement inside two weeks if the fit goes wrong later.
Insist on: a written replacement window with a number attached to it.
Dedicated Developers, Freelancers or an In-House Hire
The phrases people type are hire app developer india and hire mobile app developer india, and they cover two quite different situations. Some want a person to slot into an existing engineering team. Others want somebody to own an entire build because there is nobody technical in house at all. Those need different arrangements, so it is worth working out which one you are before you talk to anybody.
An in-house engineer in a US city is the most expensive option by a wide margin once you count salary, payroll taxes, benefits, equipment and the recruiter fee. They are also the best option when the work is genuinely permanent and deeply tied to your business. Nobody accumulates context like someone who sits in your standups for four years. If you can afford it and the roadmap justifies it, hire locally and stop reading.
Freelancers are the cheapest and the least reliable, which is a fair trade when the work is small and self-contained. Where they fail is continuity. A freelancer with a better offer disappears mid-sprint, and the marketplaces that broker them have no obligation to replace anybody. If the work matters and will run for more than a few weeks, the saving does not survive the first disappearance.
A dedicated offshore developer sits between the two and is worth its cost when you need continuity without a permanent headcount. You get the same person month to month, somebody else carries employment risk, and there is a contractual replacement obligation if the fit is wrong. The tradeoff is real, so it is worth naming: you are accepting a time zone gap and a layer between you and the person's employment.
The failure mode nobody warns you about is treating a dedicated developer like a freelancer. Send vague tickets, skip code review, hold no regular calls, and you will get exactly the outcome that gives offshore development its reputation. The engagements that work are the ones where the developer is treated as a member of the team, because that is what the model is.
One more thing worth saying plainly. If you have no engineering leadership at all, none of these three is right. You want someone to own delivery end to end, which is fixed-scope work rather than a hire. We will tell you that on the call, and our cross-platform development page covers how that arrangement runs instead, alongside Android and iOS if you already know the platform.
Six Things That Should End the Conversation
Apply these to us as readily as to anyone else. A vendor who resents the questions has answered them.
No interview offered
If you cannot interview the developer, you are being sold a resource pool and will get whoever is free that week.
The repository lives with the vendor
You are dependent on a handover that may never come. Insist on your own GitHub organization from the first commit.
Apps publish under the agency's developer account
The listing, the ratings history and update rights belong to them. Leaving means starting from a new bundle identifier and zero reviews.
Guaranteed start in 48 hours for any stack
Either expensive talent is sitting idle on the bench, or they will send whoever happens to be free and call it a match.
Replacement promised without a deadline
Goodwill is not a term. Ask for a written window with a number in it, and check what happens if the replacement also misses.
No W-8BEN-E on request
A vendor who has genuinely worked with American clients has this form ready. If they have not heard of it, you are their experiment.
Ways to Hire a Mobile App Developer in India
All three keep the developer inside your team and under your direction. The difference is how much of the week you are buying.
Full-Time Dedicated
Around 160 hours a month
A product with a continuous roadmap and an engineering lead to run it
- ✓ One named developer, your board, your standups
- ✓ Same person month to month, not a rotating pool
- ✓ 30 days notice either direction
- ✓ Replacement inside two weeks if needed
Part-Time Dedicated
Around 80 hours a month
A product that needs steady progress but not a full-time seat
- ✓ Fixed days each week so you can plan around them
- ✓ Same developer, so context does not reset
- ✓ Scales to full time when the roadmap grows
- ✓ Same notice and replacement terms
Two Week Pilot
A short paid engagement
Anyone who has been burned before and wants proof first
- ✓ Real tickets from your actual backlog
- ✓ Judge pull requests, not interview performance
- ✓ Stop at the end owing nothing further
- ✓ Rolls into either model above if it works
We quote per engagement rather than publishing a rate card, because seniority and stack move the number more than any table can capture. You get a written monthly figure in USD before anything is signed.
Hire Mobile App Developers in India by Technology
Every one of these is someone already on our payroll, not a name we would go recruiting against your requirement after you sign.
Hire React Native App Developers
TypeScript, Expo, the New Architecture with Fabric and TurboModules. The right hire when your web team already writes React, because they can review the work.
Hire Flutter App Developers
Dart, Riverpod or Bloc, Impeller rendering. The right hire when your design system is the differentiator.
Hire iOS and iPhone App Developers
Swift, SwiftUI, App Store Connect and the review process. Covers iPad too. The right hire when your users are mostly American and mostly on iPhone.
Hire Android App Developers
Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Play Console. The deepest talent pool in India, so these roles fill fastest. Often paired with an iOS developer once you have ruled out cross-platform.
Hire Cross-Platform App Developers
Engineers comfortable in both React Native and Flutter, useful when the framework decision has not been made yet.
Hire Mobile QA Engineers
Detox, XCUITest and manual device coverage. Usually the hire teams most regret not making sooner.
Your First 30 Days After You Hire an App Developer in India
Nobody publishes this, which is odd, because it is the part that decides whether the engagement works.
Week one is deliberately unproductive. The developer reads code, sets up environments, gets access to your systems and asks a lot of questions. Expect very little shipped. Teams that push for output in week one get a developer guessing at conventions instead of learning them, and you pay for that guesswork over the following months. We schedule a short call on day two so questions arrive in a batch rather than trickling into your Slack all week.
Week two is small and real. Genuine tickets from your backlog, sized deliberately small. Bug fixes, minor features, anything that forces a full pass through your build, review and release pipeline. The point is not the tickets. It is finding out where your onboarding documentation is wrong, because it always is somewhere, and better to discover that on a two hour task than a two week one.
Weeks three and four are the actual test. A feature with genuine ambiguity in it, the sort where the ticket does not fully specify the answer. What you are watching for is whether the developer asks or assumes. Assuming quietly is the single most expensive habit in remote work, and it shows up here or it shows up in month four when it costs considerably more to unwind.
At the end of the month you should be able to answer three things without hesitating. Does their code get through review without heavy rework. Do they flag problems before you find them. Would you give them something important. If any answer is no, tell us then rather than hoping month two is better, because it usually is not, and replacement is written into the agreement precisely so that conversation is easy to have. Our guide to interview questions for mobile developers covers what to probe for before you get to this point.
What Drives the Cost to Hire an App Developer in India
Seniority moves the number more than anything else, and picking the wrong level is how budgets get wasted in both directions. A junior developer on well-specified, repetitive work is excellent value. The same person on architecture decisions will cost you a rewrite. A senior engineer writing simple CRUD screens is money you did not need to spend.
The rough mapping we use is this. Junior suits defined tickets inside an existing codebase with somebody reviewing. Mid-level suits owning a feature end to end, from ticket to release, without much supervision. Senior suits architecture, technically ambiguous problems, and being the person who says a requirement will not work before it gets built. Lead suits running other developers, which you only need once you have several.
Most teams who hire mobile app developer in India roles, judging by what they ask for on the first call, request senior and actually need mid-level. The genuine exception is a first hire with nobody technical above them, where senior is worth paying for because there is no one else to catch the mistakes.
Stack scarcity moves the number next. React Native and Flutter engineers are plentiful, so those roles fill quickly and price predictably. Native Swift costs more in India than cross-platform because the pool is smaller, which is worth knowing before you set a start date around hiring an iOS developer. Android roles fill fastest of all, since Kotlin has the deepest talent pool of any mobile stack here. Anything combining mobile with a specialism such as computer vision, audio processing or embedded hardware narrows the pool sharply and prices accordingly.
Then the thing that costs nothing on paper and plenty in reality: how well specified your work is. A developer working from clear tickets against a documented API ships steadily. The same developer working from verbal requirements and a stale API spends a third of their time waiting on answers, which you pay for at the same rate. If you want to hire a dedicated mobile app developer in India and get value from it, the highest return work is on your side of the relationship before they start.
What Hiring Dedicated Developers in India Actually Looks Like
You manage the work and we manage the employment. Our developers take tickets from your board, join your standups, follow your branching model and raise pull requests for your engineers to review. Payroll, hardware, leave cover and the awkward performance conversations stay with us. What that arrangement should say on paper, including IP assignment and exit terms, is set out in our offshore contract checklist.
The gap between India and the US East Coast is ten and a half hours, and it ends more offshore engagements than bad code ever has. We work a shifted schedule against it, which gives at least four hours of live overlap with US Eastern and around two with Pacific. If you would rather not carry management load at all, say so and we will point you at fixed-scope delivery instead, which is a different arrangement and often the better one.

Questions About Hiring App Developers in India
What does it cost to hire an app developer in India?
We quote per engagement rather than publishing a rate card, because seniority and stack move the figure far more than any table communicates, and a published number invites you to compare vendors on the one dimension that matters least. What we can tell you is what drives it. Seniority is the largest factor, followed by how scarce the stack is, with native Swift and Kotlin costing more in India than React Native or Flutter because the pool is smaller. Offshore rate surveys for 2026 place Indian firms 50 to 70 percent below US agencies for equivalent work. You get a written monthly figure in USD before anything is signed.
How do we hire app developers in India without getting burned?
Interview the actual person who will do the work, not a sales engineer who disappears after signing. Ask for a paid pilot before committing to months. Get the repository in your own organization from day one so you are never dependent on somebody handing code over later. Insist on a written replacement clause with a deadline attached. Every one of those is a question you can ask any vendor before money changes hands, and the ones who get uncomfortable answering are telling you something useful.
Can we interview the developer before committing to anything?
Yes, and you should refuse to work with anyone who says no. We send profiles matched to your stack, you run your own technical interview in your own format, and you reject anyone who does not fit. There is no penalty for turning candidates down and no cap on how many you see. The person you interview is the person who joins your standups, which sounds obvious but is not universal in this industry.
How quickly can a developer start once we decide?
Usually within a week for common stacks like React Native, Flutter, Swift and Kotlin, because those people are already on our team rather than being recruited against your requirement. Niche requirements take longer and we will tell you honestly rather than promising a date we then miss. Anyone advertising a guaranteed 48 hour start for any skill set is either bench-sitting expensive talent or planning to send you whoever is free.
What happens if the developer is not a good fit?
Tell us and we replace them inside two weeks, with the handover between the outgoing and incoming developer done at our cost rather than billed to you. This is written into the agreement rather than offered as goodwill. We would rather absorb a bad match early than watch an engagement sour over three months, and if a replacement also misses we will suggest you walk instead of trying a third.
Do you offer a trial before we commit to a long engagement?
We start with a two week paid pilot on real work from your backlog rather than a contrived test task. You see genuine pull requests, genuine estimates and how the person actually communicates when something goes wrong. At the end you either continue or stop, with no notice period and no obligation. We charge for the pilot because free trials attract tyre-kickers and the resulting work tends to be theatre rather than a real sample.
Who manages the developer we hire, us or you?
You do, and that is the point of the model. Our developers take tickets from your board, attend your standups, follow your branching strategy and submit pull requests for your engineers to review. We handle employment, hardware, payroll, leave cover and the performance conversations nobody enjoys. If you would rather not carry the management load at all, fixed-scope delivery is the better arrangement and we will say so during the call.
How many hours a day will we overlap with the team?
At least four hours with US Eastern and roughly two with US Pacific, because our developers work a shifted schedule rather than standard India hours. Standups, planning and anything requiring a decision happen inside that window. The rest runs asynchronously through your own Slack and issue tracker, so your morning opens with written progress rather than a queue of blocked questions.
Who owns the code our hired developers write?
Your company, entirely, on a work-for-hire basis assigned at each invoice. Code sits in a repository under your organization from the first commit, and apps publish under your own Apple and Google developer accounts. Nothing needs to be transferred at the end because nothing was ever ours. Ask any vendor whose developer account your app publishes under, because agencies keeping that in their own name is more common than it should be.
What paperwork does a US company need to pay Indian developers?
A completed W-8BEN-E from us, which we provide before the first invoice. Without it on file your finance team is required to withhold 30 percent of every payment, and reclaiming that later takes months. We invoice monthly in US dollars through international wire, ACH or Wise. Dedicated engagements bill on a flat monthly figure per developer so your forecasting stays predictable.
Is it cheaper to hire developers in India than to use a US agency?
Substantially, and offshore rate surveys for 2026 put Indian firms 50 to 70 percent below US agencies for equivalent work. The saving is cost of living and currency rather than a quality discount. Where the saving evaporates is on badly run engagements, because a developer you cannot reach, whose code nobody reviews, working from a scope nobody wrote down, costs more than a domestic hire once you count the rebuild. The rate is the easy part. The operating model is what decides whether you actually save anything.

If the platform decision is still open, settle that before you interview anyone, because it changes who you should be talking to. The cross-platform comparison works through it.
